When looking at what beaches to stop at in San Diego, it depends on what you are looking to do. So let’s go over some of the best spots to swim, surf, and relax.
Family Beaches
If you’re visiting San Diego or perhaps planning to move there, you may want to know the best places to take your family when you hit the beach. If you haven’t figured out what beach is closest to you while you’re looking at San Diego apartments for rent, we are here to help!
California is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. In San Diego, there are many popular beaches that people flock to. Probably the most popular beach and arguably one of the most gorgeous is La Jolla Shores Beach. Not only is it stunning, but it’s also one of the cleanest beaches in San Diego. La Jolla is an awesome city to visit with delicious cafés, quaint boutiques, and small businesses settled in the perfect picturesque Californian way.
In addition to La Jolla Cove Beach, Carlsbad Beaches are another perfect place to relax with your family. Carlsbad State Beach is known as Tamarack Beach. It’s a huge, sandy, gorgeous beach perfect for family outings. Carlsbad City Beach is close by and it’s the perfect place to relax after a long day or grab a morning run.
Additionally, several beaches are not only just good for families but are also some legendary surf spots. Surfing and San Diego go hand-in-hand.
Surfing Beaches
Ocean Beach is one of the most well-known surfing spots in San Diego. It has a huge pier and is quite different from any other beach in San Diego. We love ocean beach for its laid-back vibes, awesome locals, and the perfect place to watch the sunset. But among surfers as well – it is one of the best.
This area is recommended for beginner surfers. The waves only get about 2 to 3 feet, but it is an excellent chill spot for locals. Nearby, you can find Ocean Beach Surf School to start learning the ropes. You can get surfing lessons right there and test out your skills as soon as you’re done. Ocean Beach is also a great town to visit. There are tons of bars and restaurants and yearly activities for all ages. There’s an annual Fourth of July Block Party that is out of this world!
Another recommended surf spot is Swamis Beach in Encinitas, California. It is known as one of the surfing Meccas of San Diego. It’s also a terrific place to relax and watch the surfers from the beach. To top off your visit to the beach, Encinitas offers some great cafés and restaurants within a short walking distance.
However, if you’re hoping to have a nice day with the family at Swami‘s, you may wanna wait until the swell lowers. When waves are coming in, you can guarantee there will be lots of people flocking to this beach.
Swimming Beaches
In San Diego‘s northern coastal region, the best place to stop for a nice swim would be Del Mar Beach. Del Mar City Beach, from 15th Street to the River Mouth, is one of the top-rated swim spots. There’s easy access for families of all sizes and it’s a great place to have a picnic or lunch. Nearby there is Dog Beach which is one of the few beaches in San Diego where dogs are allowed. Many Californian beaches do not allow dogs, due to cleanliness.
Lastly, the beach that may be the most famous is Coronado Beach on Coronado Island in San Diego bay. Hotel Del Coronado is a famous – and supposedly haunted hotel – built in 1888 and sits directly on Coronado beach. The hotel has even been featured in films such as Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon.
This beach has high mica content in the sand which makes it look shiny. It’s perfect for getting the best beach photos. Coronado is probably one of the most recognizable beaches in San Diego. It is a mile and a half long and it is super flat. This beach is best for hanging out or swimming and not so much for surf.
Ultimately to experience the best that San Diego has to offer is to go there and find out for yourself. However, this list can at least help you get started.
